## Overview

API Hooks are a powerful feature within RetailOS that allow retailers to customize and extend the platform's functionality. By using API hooks, clients can integrate their own business logic into the RetailOS workflows, ensuring that the software meets their unique requirements. API hooks offer flexibility and control over how data is processed, making it easier for retailers to connect with external systems and enhance their operations.

## What are API Hooks?

API hooks are customizable endpoints that can be configured to intercept API requests or responses within RetailOS. They provide three primary modes of operation:

- **Replace Hooks**: These allow you to replace RetailOS's default logic with your own custom logic. This is particularly useful when integrating with external systems like a CRM or ERP, where you might want to use your existing data rather than RetailOS's.
- **After Hooks**: These allow you to perform additional operations after RetailOS processes an API request. This can include tasks like data enrichment, logging, or triggering external workflows based on the processed data.
- **Forward Hooks**: These enable you to proxy the original API request to an external system, forwarding the request body, headers, and query parameters unaltered (except for specified headers). This is useful for cases where you want to augment or modify the data processing by another system while still leveraging RetailOS's initial request handling.

## Benefits of Using API Hooks

- **Customization**: Tailor RetailOS functionality to fit your specific business processes and requirements.
- **Integration**: Seamlessly connect RetailOS with external systems and platforms, such as CRM, ERP, or other third-party services.
- **Flexibility**: Implement business logic that runs either before or after RetailOS processes API calls, allowing for dynamic data manipulation and workflow management.
- **Scalability**: As your business grows, API hooks provide the adaptability needed to evolve your systems and processes without major re-engineering efforts.

## Use Cases for API Hooks

1. **CRM Integration**: Use replace hooks to integrate RetailOS with your existing customer relationship management system, ensuring all customer interactions are captured in one place.
2. **Inventory Management**: Implement after hooks to automatically update stock levels in an external warehouse management system whenever products are added or sold in RetailOS.
3. **Custom Pricing**: Apply complex pricing logic using replace hooks to calculate discounts or promotional offers that are specific to your business rules.
4. **Data Enrichment**: Use after hooks to enhance product data by adding third-party information, such as reviews or additional specifications, before displaying it to customers or sales associates.

## Getting Started with API Hooks

To begin using API hooks in RetailOS, you will need:

- Access to the RetailOS API documentation and the necessary credentials to configure API hooks.
- A clear understanding of your business requirements and the specific workflows you want to customize or enhance.
- Development resources to implement the custom logic required for your API hooks.

In the following sections, we will provide detailed guidance on setting up API hooks, including configuration steps and practical examples to illustrate their use.
