## Overview

RetailOS is pre-integrated with [Stripe](https://stripe.com/gb) which can be utilised during [virtual consultations](https://redantdigital.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/RET/pages/114556979) to provide customers a way to complete payment for their order during the consultation.

Below are the 4 key steps to complete a Stripe card payment:

1. The sales associate and customer create a mutual basket during a [virtual consultation](https://redantdigital.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/RET/pages/114556979)
2. The sales associate initiates checkout and selects ‘Credit / debit card’ as the customers chosen payment option
3. The customer is prompted to enter their payment details via the [Stripe Elements](https://stripe.com/gb/payments/elements) embedded payment UI
4. The customer is redirected to a RetailOS-hosted consultation summary page to confirm their order has been successfully paid

### Fraud prevention and declined payments

Payments can fail for a variety of reasons, but mostly to minimise the possibility of a fraudulent payment.

Stripe Payments handles fraud checks and declined payments using its built-in fraud protection mechanisms and algorithms designed to detect and prevent fraudulent transactions. When a customer makes a purchase, Stripe's system will analyse the transaction in real-time, looking for any signs of fraud or suspicious activity, such as unusual location or behavior patterns, multiple failed attempts, or mismatched information.

If the transaction is flagged as potentially fraudulent, Stripe's system will automatically decline the payment and notify the merchant of the issue. This ensures that the merchant is protected from fraudulent charges and chargebacks, which can result in financial losses and damage to their reputation.

This includes a list of test cards that can be used to simulate different risk factors when in [test mode](https://stripe.com/docs/test-mode).

In addition to its fraud protection mechanisms, Stripe also handles declined payments by providing an explanation of why a transaction was declined. This can help the customer understand why their payment was not accepted, and potentially resolve any issues that may be preventing them from making a successful purchase.

### Klarna payments

[Klarna](https://www.klarna.com/uk/) is a global payment method for customers to buy now and pay later. Klarna can be enabled as a payment type through the retailer's Stripe account and utilised by customers during a [virtual consultation](https://redantdigital.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/RET/pages/114556979) checkout.

### FAQs

<details>
<summary>Can I customise the look and feel of the embedded Stripe Elements?</summary>

Stripe allows you to pick from prebuilt themes, add your own color and size variables, or adjust individual components for more advanced use cases.

<details>
<summary>Does Stripe Elements support 3D Secure?</summary>

Yes - 3DS is supported out of the box by Stripe. It can either be controlled when the `paymentIntent` is created ([https://stripe.com/docs/payments/3d-secure?locale=en-GB&platform=web#manual-three-ds](https://stripe.com/docs/payments/3d-secure?locale=en-GB&platform=web#manual-three-ds)), or managed dynamically using the Stripe dashboard ([https://stripe.com/docs/payments/3d-secure?locale=en-GB&platform=web#three-ds-radar](https://stripe.com/docs/payments/3d-secure?locale=en-GB&platform=web#three-ds-radar)). This is likely to be determined by the requirements of the retailer during setup.

For instance, if the retailer has a custom fraud management system then they may want to manage 3DS manually, whereas if the client is using Stripe’s Radar system they will manage everything through the Stripe dashboard.

More information on how to activate 3DS can be found [here](https://redantdigital.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/RET/pages/24543241).
