## Overview

[Klarna](https://www.klarna.com/uk/) is a global payment method for customers to buy now and pay later. Klarna can be enabled as a payment type through the retailer's Stripe account and utilised by customers during a [virtual consultation](https://redantdigital.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/RET/pages/114556979) checkout.

> ℹ️ To enable Klarna as a payment type you must first activate it via [payment settings](https://dashboard.stripe.com/settings/payments) of your Stripe account.

Klarna gives customers a range of [payment options](https://redantdigital.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/RET/pages/404946981/Klarna+Payments#Payment-options) during checkout. Available payment options vary depending on the customer’s billing address and the transaction amount. These payment options make it convenient for customers to purchase items in all price ranges.

Subject to the location of the customer, Stripe users can accept Klarna payments from customers in the following countries, provided the presentment currency matches the currency of the customer’s country.

### Payment options

> Based on your customer’s country and the transaction amount, Klarna offers various payment options. With each option, funds transfer to your Stripe account up front and Klarna collects the purchase amount from your customer, who repays Klarna directly. The options offered to the customer include:

- **Installments**: Pay for the purchase in 3 or 4 interest-free installments.
- **Pay later**: Pay for the purchase in 30 days.
- **Financing**: Spread the cost of a purchase over multiple months. This option usually involves interest and a credit check.
- **Pay now**: Pay for the purchase immediately by direct debit, card, or bank transfer.

> ℹ️ A full list of payment options based on the location of the customer can be found [here](https://stripe.com/docs/payments/klarna?locale=en-GB#payment-options).

### Payment flow

Below are the 5 key steps to complete a Klarna payment:

1. The sales associate and customer create a mutual basket during a [virtual consultation](https://redantdigital.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/RET/pages/114556979)
2. The sales associate initiates checkout and selects ‘Klarna’ as the customers chosen payment option
3. The customer is prompted to enter their name and email address via the [Stripe Elements](https://stripe.com/gb/payments/elements) embedded payment UI
4. The customer is redirected to a Klarna-hosted payment page where they must verify their phone number (via a two-step authentication), select how they wish to pay (e.g. installments, financing, etc.), and provide their payment details
5. The customer is redirected back to a RetailOS-hosted consultation summary page to confirm their order has been placed

> ℹ️ If the customer has used Klarna previously they won’t need to set-up a payment card, as they will already have one on file.
